Southwest Detroit withstood many changes in the 20th century. The 21st century shows great promise for the area thanks to the growing Latino population.
On March 26, 2006, the Latino population staged a march for immigration rights. They wanted to show their support for all immigrants to the United States.

On May 5, 2006, Governor Jennifer Granholm visited a local Latino grocery store, The Honey Bee. The Honey Bee was established in the 1950s by the Alfaro family who came from Mexico. The owners just finished renovations on the store this year. It is still family owned. It is located on Bagley and 16th Street on Detroit's Southwest side. This is only one of many examples of the improvement of the area by Latino business people.
